A Canadian work permit application typically involves first obtaining a job offer from a Canadian employer, often supported by an LMIA unless exempt. Applicants must then apply online through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), provide required documents like a passport and job offer, pay applicable fees, and complete biometric enrollment.

Under new Canadian regulations, applying for a work permit at a port of entry is no longer an option for most foreign nationals already in Canada. Instead, both new applications and extensions must be filed online. Applicants arriving from outside Canada may still be permitted to apply at the border.

Canada offers two main work permit options. Employer-specific permits restrict work to one employer, job, and location, while open permits let you work for most employers without a job offer or LMIA. Key documents include a job offer, LMIA if required, passport, proof of qualifications, and sometimes financial or medical evidence. Applications can be submitted online or via application center.
