To obtain a Canadian work permit, most applicants need a job offer from a Canadian employer. In many cases, the employer must secure a Labour Market Impact , unless the role qualifies for an exemption. Applicants then apply through the IRCC online system, upload required documents such as a passport and offer letter, pay the application and biometrics fees, and complete biometrics.

Under Canada’s updated immigration rules, most foreign nationals already in Canada are no longer allowed to apply for a work permit at a port of entry. Both first-time work permits and extensions must now be submitted online. Applicants outside Canada may still qualify to apply for a work permit upon arrival, depending on eligibility.

Canada provides two main work permit types. Employer-specific permits tie you to a particular job, employer, and location, while open permits allow work for most employers without a job offer or LMIA. Required documents include a job offer, LMIA if needed, passport, qualifications, and sometimes proof of funds or a medical exam. Applications can be submitted online or at a visa application center.
