Most Canadian work permits require applicants to first secure a valid job offer from a Canadian employer. In many situations, the employer must obtain an LMIA, unless the position is exempt. Applicants then apply online through the IRCC system, submit documents like a passport and job offer, pay required fees, and complete biometrics.

Under Canada’s updated immigration rules, most foreign nationals who are already in the country can no longer apply for a work permit at a port of entry. Both first-time work permits and permit extensions must now be submitted online. Applicants outside Canada may still be eligible to apply for a work permit upon arrival, depending on their circumstances.

Canada offers two main work permit types. Employer-specific permits tie you to a particular job, employer, and location, while open permits allow work for most employers without a job offer or LMIA. Required documents include a job offer, LMIA if needed, passport, qualifications, and sometimes proof of funds or a medical exam. Applications can be submitted online or at a visa application center.
