In most cases, getting a Canadian work permit requires securing a job offer from a Canadian company, along with an LMIA unless the job qualifies for an exemption. After that, applicants submit an online application through IRCC, upload identification and employment documents, pay processing and biometrics fees, and complete fingerprinting and photo requirements.

Recent Canadian updates mean most applicants inside Canada can no longer apply for work permits at ports of entry. Initial work permits and renewals must be completed through online applications. Those outside Canada may still apply for a work permit at entry, provided they meet all eligibility requirements.

Canadian work permits come in two types: employer-specific, tying you to a particular employer, job, and location, and open permits, which allow work for most employers without a job offer or LMIA. Required documents include a job offer, passport, proof of qualifications, and sometimes proof of funds or a medical exam. Applications can be done online or at a visa application center.
