The Canadian work permit process typically requires a job offer from a Canadian company, often supported by an LMIA unless an exemption applies. Once the offer is secured, applicants file an online application through IRCC, submit supporting documents like passports and credentials, pay processing and biometrics fees, and complete fingerprint and photo collection.

Following recent rule changes, foreign nationals already in Canada generally cannot apply for a work permit at a port of entry. Instead, all new work permit applications and extensions must be submitted online. Applicants entering Canada from abroad may still have the option to apply at entry if eligible.

Canada’s work permits come in two categories: employer-specific, which tie you to a particular employer, job, and location, and open, which let you work for most employers without a job offer or LMIA. Documents include a job offer, LMIA if needed, passport, proof of qualifications, and sometimes proof of funds or a medical exam. Applications can be filed online or at a visa application center.
