In the U.S., part-time workers may qualify for partial unemployment benefits if their hours or pay were reduced involuntarily or if they accepted part-time work while seeking full-time employment. You must report all gross wages weekly. Benefits decrease based on earnings, but some payments may still be issued, which can extend your benefit period.

The NYS DOL now uses an hours-based method for partial unemployment benefits. Workers can keep full benefits while working up to seven days a week if hours do not exceed 30 and earnings stay below the maximum gross rate, excluding self-employment. Reductions are applied based on weekly hours, not daily work.

If your part-time earnings are below your weekly unemployment benefit, you may still receive full or partial payments. Part-time work generally means under 40 hours per week. When certifying benefits, report all gross wages, including part-time pay before taxes or deductions, even if it seems less than your weekly benefit.
