In the U.S., part-time workers may qualify for partial unemployment benefits if their hours or pay were cut involuntarily, or if they took a part-time job while seeking full-time work. All gross wages must be reported weekly. Benefits are reduced based on earnings, but you may still receive some payments, which can also extend your benefit period.

New York’s partial unemployment program now calculates benefits by total weekly hours. Workers can work up to seven days without losing full benefits if their hours are 30 or fewer and earnings are under the maximum gross rate, excluding self-employment. Reductions occur incrementally based on total hours worked.

Earnings from part-time work that are under your weekly unemployment benefit may still allow you to receive full or partial benefits. Part-time generally refers to fewer than 40 hours per week. When certifying benefits, report all gross wages, including part-time pay before taxes or deductions, even if it is below your weekly benefit amount.
