If you work part-time in the U.S., you may be eligible for partial unemployment benefits, particularly if your hours or pay were reduced involuntarily or if you accepted part-time work while searching for full-time employment. All gross wages must be reported weekly. Benefits are reduced based on income, yet some payments may still continue and extend your benefit duration.

The NYS DOL’s partial unemployment rules now use total hours worked to calculate benefits. You can work seven days a week without losing full benefits if your hours are 30 or less and earnings are below the maximum gross rate, excluding self-employment. Benefits are reduced based on total weekly hours, not daily work.

Part-time workers earning less than their weekly unemployment benefit may still get full or partial payments. A part-time job typically involves fewer than 40 hours per week. You must report all gross wages when certifying, including part-time income before deductions, even if it appears smaller than your weekly benefit.
