In the U.S., you can often collect partial unemployment benefits while working part-time if your hours or pay were involuntarily reduced or if you accepted part-time work while seeking full-time employment. All gross wages must be reported weekly. Benefits decrease with income, but partial payments may continue and can extend your total benefit duration.

The NYS DOL now calculates partial unemployment using total hours worked. If you work 30 hours or less in a week and earn less than the maximum gross benefit, excluding self-employment, you can work up to seven days without losing full benefits. Reductions are based on weekly hours instead of daily work.

You may be eligible for full or partial unemployment benefits if your part-time pay is less than your weekly benefit. Part-time usually means less than 40 hours weekly. When certifying, report all gross wages, including part-time income before taxes or deductions, even if it appears smaller than your weekly benefit.
