In the United States, you may qualify for partial unemployment benefits when working part-time if your hours or wages were involuntarily reduced, or if you’re looking for full-time employment but took a part-time job. You must report all gross earnings weekly. Benefits are reduced by earnings but can still provide income and extend your benefit period.

NYS DOL’s new partial unemployment system calculates benefits using an “hours-based” method. Full benefits are maintained if you work 30 hours or less in a week and earn below the maximum gross rate, excluding self-employment income. Benefits are now reduced in increments based on total weekly hours rather than each day of part-time work.

If you earn less from part-time work than your weekly unemployment benefit, you could still receive full or partial benefits. Part-time generally means fewer than 40 hours weekly. When claiming benefits, report all gross wages, including part-time earnings before taxes or deductions, even if they appear below your benefit amount.
