Partial unemployment benefits in the United States may be available to part-time workers whose hours or pay were involuntarily reduced, or who accepted a part-time job while seeking full-time work. Weekly reporting of all gross wages is required. Benefits are reduced based on earnings, yet some payments may continue, potentially extending the total benefit duration.

The NYS DOL’s partial unemployment program now uses an hours-based calculation. Workers can work up to seven days per week without losing full benefits if they work 30 hours or less and earn below the maximum gross benefit, excluding self-employment. Benefits are reduced incrementally according to total weekly hours rather than daily work.

You may still receive full or partial unemployment benefits if your part-time wages are below your weekly benefit. Part-time usually refers to working under 40 hours weekly. When certifying, report all gross wages, including part-time earnings before taxes or deductions, even if the total seems less than your weekly benefit.
