In the U.S., part-time workers may still get partial unemployment benefits if their hours or pay were cut involuntarily or if they took part-time work while seeking full-time employment. All gross wages must be reported weekly. Benefits are reduced based on earnings, but you may still receive payments, which can also extend your benefit period.

New York’s partial unemployment program uses an hours-based system. Workers can maintain full benefits while working up to seven days weekly if they do not exceed 30 hours and earn below the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment. Benefits decrease incrementally based on total weekly hours.

If your part-time earnings are less than your weekly unemployment benefit, you may still receive full or partial payments. Part-time generally means working fewer than 40 hours per week. When certifying benefits, all gross wages must be reported, including part-time pay before taxes or deductions, even if it’s below your weekly benefit.
