In the U.S., part-time workers can often collect partial unemployment benefits if their hours or pay were reduced involuntarily, or if they are seeking full-time work but accepted a part-time role. You must report all gross wages weekly. Benefits are reduced based on earnings, but you may still receive payments, which can also extend your benefit period.

The NYS DOL’s new partial unemployment system uses an “hours-based” approach. You can work up to seven days a week without losing full benefits if you work 30 hours or fewer and earn less than the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment income. Benefits are reduced based on total weekly hours rather than per day worked.

If your part-time pay is below your weekly unemployment benefit, you might still receive full or partial payments. Part-time generally means working fewer than 40 hours per week. When certifying benefits, you must report all gross wages, including part-time income before taxes or deductions, even if it seems less than your benefit.
