Part-time workers in the U.S. may receive partial unemployment benefits if their hours or wages were cut involuntarily, or if they took a part-time job while looking for full-time work. Weekly reporting of all gross income is necessary. Benefits are adjusted based on earnings, but some payments can still be received, which may prolong the overall benefit period.

New York’s partial unemployment system calculates benefits based on total hours worked. Workers can maintain full benefits while working up to seven days a week if they work 30 hours or less and earn under the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment income. Reductions occur in increments by weekly hours, not daily.

Earnings from part-time work that are below your weekly unemployment benefit may still allow you to receive full or partial payments. Part-time generally means working less than 40 hours per week. When certifying benefits, you are required to report all gross wages, including part-time pay before deductions, even if they are under your weekly benefit.
