Part-time employees in the U.S. may qualify for partial unemployment benefits if hours or pay were reduced involuntarily or if they accepted part-time work while looking for full-time employment. Weekly reporting of all gross wages is required. Benefits are reduced based on earnings, but partial payments may continue, potentially extending the overall benefit duration.

New York’s partial unemployment program now calculates benefits based on weekly hours. Workers can maintain full benefits if their hours do not exceed 30 and earnings are under the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment. Reductions occur in increments according to total weekly hours, not daily.

You can still receive full or partial unemployment benefits if your part-time wages are less than your weekly benefit. Part-time work generally refers to fewer than 40 hours per week. When certifying, you must report all gross wages, including part-time pay before taxes or deductions, even if it appears below your benefit.
