Part-time employees in the U.S. may receive partial unemployment benefits if their hours or wages were reduced involuntarily or if they took a part-time job while looking for full-time work. Weekly reporting of all gross income is necessary. Benefits are adjusted based on earnings, but partial payments may still be received, which can prolong the overall benefit period.

NYS DOL’s partial unemployment system now uses an hours-based approach. You can work up to seven days a week without losing full benefits if you work 30 hours or less and earn below the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment. Reductions are applied in increments based on total weekly hours rather than per day.

If your part-time earnings fall below your weekly unemployment benefit, you can still receive full or partial payments. Part-time typically means working under 40 hours a week. All gross wages, including part-time pay before taxes or deductions, must be reported when certifying benefits, even if they seem less than your weekly amount.
