If you work part-time in the U.S., you may qualify for partial unemployment benefits when your hours or pay were involuntarily reduced or if you took part-time work while seeking full-time employment. You must report all gross wages weekly. Benefits are reduced based on income, but some payments may still be received and can extend your benefit duration.

The NYS DOL’s new partial unemployment system calculates benefits based on total weekly hours. You may work seven days without losing full benefits if you work 30 hours or less and earn below the maximum gross benefit rate, not counting self-employment. Reductions are applied in increments by weekly hours, not daily.

If your part-time pay is less than your weekly unemployment benefit, you could still be eligible for full or partial payments. Part-time typically refers to working fewer than 40 hours a week. All gross wages, including part-time earnings before taxes or deductions, must be reported when certifying benefits, even if they seem small.
