Partial unemployment benefits in the United States are often available to part-time employees whose hours or pay were involuntarily reduced or who took part-time work while seeking full-time employment. Weekly reporting of all gross wages is required. Benefits decrease according to earnings, but some payments may still be issued, extending potential benefit duration.

With NYS DOL’s new hours-based partial unemployment system, you can work up to seven days weekly without losing full benefits if you work 30 hours or less and earn below the maximum gross benefit, excluding self-employment. Benefits are reduced in increments according to total weekly hours, not per day.

If your part-time wages are lower than your weekly unemployment benefit, you could still qualify for full or partial payments. Part-time usually means working fewer than 40 hours weekly. All gross wages, including part-time income before taxes or deductions, must be reported when certifying benefits, even if it seems less than your benefit.
