If you work part-time in the U.S., you may still be eligible for partial unemployment benefits, especially if your hours or pay were reduced involuntarily or you accepted part-time work while seeking full-time employment. Weekly reporting of all gross wages is mandatory. Benefits are reduced based on income, but some payments may continue.

NYS DOL’s partial unemployment system now uses an hours-based approach. You can work up to seven days a week without losing full benefits if your hours stay at 30 or below and you earn less than the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment. Reductions are applied based on total weekly hours, not per day.

If your part-time pay is lower than your weekly unemployment benefit, you may still get full or partial benefits. Part-time typically means working fewer than 40 hours weekly. All gross wages, including part-time earnings before taxes or deductions, must be reported when certifying benefits, even if they appear smaller than your benefit.
