If you work part-time in the U.S., you may be eligible for partial unemployment benefits, especially if your hours or pay were reduced involuntarily or you took part-time work while seeking full-time employment. All gross wages must be reported weekly. Benefits decrease based on income, but some payments may still continue, prolonging your benefit period.

The NYS DOL now uses total weekly hours to calculate partial unemployment benefits. Workers can keep full benefits while working up to seven days a week if their hours remain 30 or less and earnings stay below the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment. Reductions are based on total weekly hours, not daily work.

Even if your part-time wages are lower than your weekly unemployment benefit, you could still receive full or partial payments. Part-time work typically involves under 40 hours per week. When certifying benefits, all gross wages, including part-time pay before taxes or deductions, must be reported, even if below your weekly benefit.
