Partial unemployment benefits in the U.S. are available to part-time employees whose hours or pay were cut involuntarily or who accepted part-time work while looking for full-time employment. Weekly reporting of all gross wages is required. Benefits are reduced according to earnings, yet some payments may still be issued, extending your benefit duration.

New York’s partial unemployment program now calculates benefits based on weekly hours. Workers can work up to seven days without losing full benefits if their weekly hours stay at 30 or fewer and earnings remain under the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment. Reductions occur incrementally based on total weekly hours.

Part-time workers earning less than their weekly unemployment benefit may still qualify for full or partial payments. Part-time usually means working fewer than 40 hours weekly. You must report all gross wages when certifying benefits, including part-time income before taxes or deductions, even if it appears below your weekly benefit.
