According to Article 57, Items 1 and 2 of the 'Regulations for the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China': 'Motor vehicles shall use turn signals in accordance with the following provisions: (1) When turning left, changing lanes to the left, preparing to overtake, leaving a parking spot, or making a U-turn, the left turn signal shall be activated in advance; (2) When turning right, changing lanes to the right, returning to the original lane after overtaking, or parking by the roadside, the right turn signal shall be activated in advance.' Penalty for violation: Failure to use turn signals as required may result in a fine of 20-200 RMB and 1 point deducted from the driver's license. Therefore, not signaling when turning left is a violation of traffic rules, and the driver will be penalized with 1 point deducted and a fine of 100 RMB.
After driving for so many years, I know for sure that failing to signal a left turn will result in demerit points—it's no trivial matter. Once, I was in a hurry and forgot to turn on my signal while making a left turn. I got caught by a roadside traffic camera, which cost me both points and a fine. I regretted it so much. Think about it—turn signals aren't just a formality; they let other drivers know your intentions, helping to prevent rear-end or side collisions. I remember that time when I didn’t signal, the car behind almost hit me—luckily, they braked in time. Now, I’ve made it a habit to signal at least two seconds before turning and to check the dashboard to ensure the light is on. If your turn signals keep malfunctioning, it’s best to get them checked at a repair shop—don’t wait until an accident happens. In short, demerit points are minor compared to safety. Signaling every turn saves a lot of trouble.
