Why Doesn't the Car Start When Turning the Key?

Here are the reasons why the car doesn't start when turning the key: 1. Steering wheel lock: If the steering wheel is not straightened when parking, it may automatically lock. The steering wheel lock is a simple anti-theft feature for vehicle safety. After the car is turned off, if the steering wheel is turned left or right or if the wheels are not aligned when parking, force applied can cause the steering wheel to rotate, triggering the self-locking function. The steering lock pin engages with the steering column, making it impossible to turn the key even with force, as the vehicle's anti-theft system perceives a theft risk and locks the steering wheel to prevent theft. 2. Incorrect gear position: If the car is not in the P gear when parking, it may not start. Generally, the P or N gear is the correct starting position for automatic transmission vehicles. Placing the gear in R or any other position not only prevents the car from starting but also poses a safety hazard.
I sometimes encounter the issue of turning the key but the car won't start, which is quite common. Typical causes include a low or aging battery with insufficient charge, a burnt-out starter coil preventing startup, carbon buildup on spark plugs affecting ignition, a faulty fuel pump failing to supply fuel, or interference from the anti-theft system locking the car. First, check if the battery terminals are loose, corroded, or if the voltage is below 12 volts. If the lights dim immediately when turned on, it's likely a battery issue requiring charging or replacement. Once, I forgot to turn off the headlights after parking, and the next morning the car wouldn't start no matter what—I ended up getting a jump-start from a friend to solve it. Develop good habits by regularly checking the battery and starter. Problems are more likely in winter, so preventive maintenance can avoid surprises. If the car won't start, don’t keep trying forcefully as it can damage the battery—promptly seek help from a nearby auto repair shop.
