Why doesn't Nissan support CarPlay?

Nissan Connect does not support CarPlay because Nissan Connect and CarPlay are different systems, belonging to two separate in-car infotainment platforms. Nissan Connect cannot be hacked to enable CarPlay functionality, though most Nissan models do come with CarPlay-compatible head units. How CarPlay works: The system operates by connecting an iPhone to the vehicle via USB, upon which the two devices immediately establish a handshake. This allows users to access various iPhone functions without manually operating or looking at the phone screen, enabling drivers to keep their attention and focus on the road. This control method makes driving safer and more convenient. The purpose of CarPlay: CarPlay was designed to allow drivers to use all iPhone functions hands-free, including music playback, navigation, calls, reading messages, and even watching online videos. CarPlay enables access to most basic iPhone features through the vehicle's control panel. Key functions include Siri voice assistant, iTunes music playback, Apple Maps, and messaging services. With CarPlay, drivers can make and receive calls without taking their hands off the steering wheel, and can also listen to voicemail messages.
I guess Nissan doesn't support CarPlay in some models mainly due to integration costs and technical issues. CarPlay requires specific hardware interfaces, such as compatible chips for the infotainment screen, which require additional procurement and production. Nissan has already invested heavily in its own NissanConnect system, and adding CarPlay would require redeveloping the software and possibly paying Apple licensing fees, affecting vehicle pricing. There are significant differences in global markets; for example, many users in China use Baidu CarLife, so Nissan might prioritize local support to reduce risks. However, newer models like the Altima and Sylphy now include CarPlay, showing that demand is driving change. Owners who want to upgrade can check their model year and configuration or wait for a software update.
