But in recent years, starting with the 7 Series, there's been a major improvement. The X5 we bought last year has a fully leather-wrapped dashboard, and the crystal gear shifter looks especially premium when lit up at night. Actually, BMW intentionally maintains a minimalist style to avoid flashy designs distracting from driving. Look at those M series performance cars - carbon fiber trim with red stitching makes you want to step on the gas as soon as you sit inside. Though the entry-level 3 Series is indeed more basic than the Audi A4 in the same price range, but that's because all the money goes into the driving dynamics system.
