Why does the windshield washer fluid not go down?

There are two possible reasons: first, there may be a lack of windshield washer fluid; second, the nozzle might be clogged. It is recommended to first check the windshield washer fluid reservoir. The functions of automotive windshield washer fluid include the following four points: 1. Cleaning performance: Windshield washer fluid is composed of various surfactants and additives. Surfactants usually have functions such as wetting, penetrating, and solubilizing, thus achieving the effect of cleaning and removing dirt; 2. Antifreeze performance: It can significantly reduce the freezing point of the liquid, thereby achieving an antifreeze effect and quickly dissolving frost; 3. Anti-fog performance: A single-molecule protective layer is formed on the glass surface, which can prevent the formation of fog droplets, ensuring the windshield is clear and transparent with a clear view; 4. Anti-static performance: After cleaning with windshield washer fluid, substances adsorbed on the glass surface can eliminate the charge on the glass surface, providing anti-static performance.
I've been driving for over a decade and have encountered the issue of windshield washer fluid not flowing down several times. The most common cause is blockage by dirt or debris in the spray nozzles or filler port, such as dust or small insect carcasses obstructing the passage, preventing the fluid from flowing. You can start by carefully cleaning the nozzle openings with a fine needle, then try flushing the hose with tap water—this method often works. If it's not a blockage, the issue might be a faulty pump. When adding washer fluid, pop the hood and activate the wipers to listen for the pump's humming sound. No sound means you should check the battery connections or consider replacing the pump directly. Leakage in the tubing is another possibility; inspect the hoses and connections for any looseness or cracks. Additionally, in cold weather, the fluid can freeze and cause blockages, so using antifreeze washer fluid is recommended to prevent such troubles. Personally, I flush the washer reservoir system every six months to avoid buildup of impurities and keep the system clear.
