Why Does the Windshield Fog Up?

In winter, it is due to the high humidity inside the cabin, which condenses into fog when it meets the cold glass. In summer, fogging only occurs on rainy days. Methods to prevent windshield fogging: 1. Anti-fog spray prevention method. Spray a small amount of anti-fog agent on the car window and wipe it clean to remove dirt and stains from the glass. While polishing the glass, a thin transparent protective film is formed on the glass, which can effectively prevent the condensation of water vapor on the glass and the formation of fog, especially suitable for cold winters. 2. Air conditioning cooling method. Use the air conditioning's cooling and dehumidifying function to reduce air humidity and remove fog. In summer, especially when multiple people enter the car, if the air conditioning is not turned on in time, the high humidity of the exhaled air will quickly cause the front windshield to fog up. 3. Air conditioning heating method. In winter, use the warm air from the air conditioner to blow hot air onto the glass, quickly raising the temperature of the front glass and reducing the temperature difference between the inner and outer surfaces of the window glass. This can promptly prevent excessive fogging on the front windshield. However, it should be noted that the rear and side glass temperatures rise slowly, so it takes a longer time to remove all the fog.
I've been driving for over a decade and have encountered windshield fogging countless times, which is quite annoying. It mainly occurs during rainy days or in winter. The core issue is when interior moisture meets the cold glass and condenses into water droplets. The humidity comes from breathing, wet clothes, or rain leaking through improperly closed windows. When there's a significant temperature difference, such as when the heater is on while it's cold outside, the glass cools rapidly, causing the moisture to condense. Once, I was in a hurry and ignored it, resulting in fogged-up vision that nearly caused an accident—safety first! As for solutions, immediately turn on the defroster, direct the fan toward the windshield, and switch to external circulation to reduce humidity. Develop good habits, like cleaning the inside of the windshield during car washes and checking door seals to prevent aging and leaks.
