Why does the EPC light suddenly come on and the engine shake while driving a Passat?

EPC indicator light coming on indicates that there may be a fault in the electronic throttle system, and the fault may affect the normal use of the vehicle. Causes of this fault: Intake system failure, such as leakage or blockage; Dirty throttle body, excessive carbon deposits; Use of substandard fuel; Abnormal cylinder pressure, poor working condition; Valve failure, sticking or carbon deposits, etc.; ECU failure; Sporadic failure, false alarm. Solutions: Troubleshoot the intake system failure, use qualified fuel, clean the throttle body; Remove carbon deposits from related parts; Rewrite ECU related data.
I experienced the same situation last time I drove my Passat. The EPC light suddenly flashed on the highway, and the engine shook violently, feeling like the wheels were about to fly off. It was really scary at that moment—the car had no power to accelerate and was accompanied by a stuttering sound. Later, when I took it to the shop, the mechanic said the throttle body was severely carbon-fouled, and the mass airflow sensor was giving false signals, triggering the system's protection mode. After cleaning the throttle body, it returned to normal. But this issue is no small matter—if it happens during a long trip or in rainy/snowy weather, it can be very dangerous. I recommend pulling over immediately and turning on the hazard lights if this happens—don’t push through to your destination. Also, make sure to perform regular maintenance to prevent sensor dust buildup from affecting signal transmission.
