Why does the car still not stop when the handbrake is very tight?

If the car handbrake is adjusted very tight but still cannot stop the vehicle, the following aspects can be considered: 1. Insufficient extension force of the brake wheel cylinder: Check whether there is air in the oil pipeline, whether the oil passage is leaking, and whether the brake wheel cylinder is leaking oil. If none of the above situations exist, the problem may lie with the master cylinder. 2. Check the wear degree of the brake drum: If the brake drum is excessively worn, it can be directly replaced. 3. Check whether the friction surface of the brake pads is even: Check whether the contact area between the brake pads and the brake drum reaches the maximum. Some brake pads only have half of their surface in contact with the brake drum. If such a situation exists, it is recommended to replace the brake pads. 4. Check whether the axle oil seal is leaking: If any oil stains invade the brake mechanism, the braking effect will be greatly reduced.
I've repaired quite a few cars, and this issue is pretty common. When the handbrake is pulled tight but still fails to hold the vehicle, the main causes are usually internal component wear or improper adjustment. For example, if the brake pads are too thin or completely worn out, there's insufficient friction, so even with the handbrake fully engaged, the car won't stay put. Another possibility is that the brake cable is rusted or stuck, preventing the force from reaching the actual braking mechanism. This is most noticeable when parking on slopes, as gravity makes it easier for the car to roll. I remember checking a friend's car and finding oil contamination or water accumulation inside the brake drum, causing the system to slip and fail. Ignoring these details can damage the entire braking system and increase repair costs. A simple self-test I recommend: after parking and engaging the handbrake, try pushing the car. If the wheels move, take it to a professional shop immediately—don't risk safety issues by delaying.
