Why Does the BMW 7 Series Steering Gear Make Abnormal Noises?

BMW 7 Series steering gear abnormal noises may be caused by steering gear failure. Causes of steering gear failure: Power steering pump failure. When testing shows that the pump pressure of the power steering pump fails to meet the standard value, it is evident that the heavy steering is related to this. First, check whether the mating surface of the flow control valve and valve seat, as well as the safety valve steel ball, are not tightly sealed. The return oil filter in the oil reservoir is clogged. Long-term lack of maintenance and replacement of the return oil filter in the oil reservoir leads to clogging, hindering the circulation of power steering fluid and increasing the return oil back pressure, which also results in heavy steering. Solutions for steering gear abnormal noises: Aging or excessive play in the steering tie rod ball joint. Replace the steering tie rod ball joint and perform a four-wheel alignment. Leakage in the steering gear dust cover. Replace the dust cover or reapply grease. Steering gear failure. This may be caused by excessive clearance in the steering gear meshing gears, requiring replacement of the steering gear. Improper tension or aging of the power steering belt. Adjust the belt tension or replace the belt.
I've been repairing BMW 7 Series for over a decade, and the most common cause of steering gear noise is issues with the power steering pump, such as insufficient oil pressure or lubrication fluid leakage, which can cause squeaking sounds when turning the steering wheel. Next is internal gear or bearing wear in the steering gear. After prolonged use, these components in BMWs can loosen, especially making more noticeable sounds during sharp turns. Another cause is aging or overly loose drive belts, which connect to the power steering pump and can produce a rattling noise if worn. I recommend checking the fluid level immediately to see if it's low, trying a new belt, or going to a 4S shop for a comprehensive diagnosis. Not fixing it can make long-term driving unsafe, as the steering wheel may become heavy and hard to control. Additionally, remember to perform regular maintenance, checking the steering system every six months to avoid these issues, saving both money and hassle.
