Why does the Audi A5 display a loss of R gear?

It may be caused by a damaged gear switch or a loose cable. P gear: Parking gear, used when the car is parked for a long time. If not placed in this gear, the engine will not start. R gear: Reverse gear, changes the direction of the car's movement, used when the car needs to reverse or park. N gear: Neutral gear, used when waiting at traffic lights or towing. D gear: Drive gear, controls the forward movement of the car, this gear is frequently used. L gear: High torque gear, specifically used for climbing slopes or in heavy traffic.
I've been through this! My A5 popped up the same warning before. Usually it's the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) acting up, detecting abnormal reverse gear signals and triggering the protection lock directly. Could be a failing reverse position sensor or loose wiring. The most frustrating case was when a solenoid valve in the transmission valve body got stuck, causing insufficient hydraulic pressure for gear engagement when shifting to reverse. If restarting the car or pumping the brakes a few times temporarily fixes it, don't take it lightly - immediately scan for trouble codes with a diagnostic tool. It might completely fail someday, and getting stranded on the road is the real nightmare.
Don't panic! The A5 showing loss of reverse gear is most likely the transmission acting up. Most of the time, it's due to poor contact in the microswitch under the gear lever—oxidized metal plates fail to transmit the reverse signal. It could also be a loose or misaligned shift cable not engaging properly. Last time, a friend's A5 had moisture in the wiring harness connector causing a short circuit, triggering a dashboard warning. Remember to shift to P, turn off the engine, wait two minutes, and restart—the system might reset. If that doesn’t work, avoid forcing it into gear to prevent damage to the transmission gearset. Get it diagnosed with ODIS software ASAP to pinpoint the issue.
