Why Can't the Rear Brake Pads of a BMW Be Reset?

The rear brake pads of a BMW can only be successfully reset when there are no check control messages (i.e., the yellow triangle symbol on the dashboard is off); after replacing the new brake pad sensor wire; and after the onboard clock and date are correctly adjusted. Brake Pad Reset Method: Close the door, press the start button without stepping on the brake to power on the vehicle. Press and hold the black button at the bottom left of the dashboard until the oil or brake pad symbol appears. Do not release the button when a triangle symbol appears in the middle. When the brake pad symbol appears, release the button, then press and hold the button again. "RESET" or "Reset" will be displayed. Release and press and hold the button again to complete the reset. Precautions: The brake pad wear sensor must be replaced after removal because it loses its ability to secure itself in the new brake pads.
Having repaired BMWs for so many years, I often encounter owners reporting issues with rear brake pad reset failures. The main reason is that the rear brake pad sensor might not be properly connected or has aged and failed. BMW's system locks the reset function upon detecting a wear signal. Additionally, if the iDrive settings aren't followed in the correct sequence during operation—such as forgetting to turn off the ignition before restarting or selecting the wrong menu—the system won't recognize the reset. Moreover, the electrical wiring in some older models is prone to oxidation, causing signal interruptions. I recommend avoiding DIY fixes and instead visiting a professional shop for diagnosis. Typically, replacing the sensor or updating the software resolves the issue, preventing safety risks. Remember to regularly inspect the braking system to avoid similar problems.
