Why Can't the High Beam Be Turned On in Automatic Mode on a Mercedes-Benz?

Mercedes-Benz cannot turn on the high beam in automatic mode because the vehicle has a high beam obstacle setting. Below are two methods to enable the high beam: 1. Manual Activation (1) Start the engine. Then rotate the lighting switch to the [Low Beam/High Beam] position and push the combination switch past the pressure point. 2. Activation via the Intelligent Light Control System (1) Enable the Intelligent Light Control. Press the left or right button on the left side of the steering wheel to select the [Settings] menu. Press the up or down button on the left side of the steering wheel to select the [Lighting] submenu. Press the middle [OK] button to confirm. Press the up or down button on the left side of the steering wheel to select [Intelligent Light Control]. When [On] or [Off] appears, select [On], then press the middle [OK] button.
I've encountered similar issues with my Mercedes-Benz several times, mainly concerning the automatic high beam system which turns on/off based on environmental conditions. The Mercedes automatic function works via cameras and sensors on the windshield - when detecting sufficient streetlight brightness or other vehicles, it automatically switches high beams to avoid dazzling others. However, if the sensors get dirty or are obscured by tree shadows, the system may misjudge and fail to activate high beams. Additionally, not setting the light control stalk to auto position or outdated software could also cause malfunctions. Personally, I solved the problem after cleaning the sensors. I recommend regularly wiping the cameras and checking system settings. If issues persist, it's best to visit an authorized dealership for specialized circuit diagnostics to ensure night driving safety.
