As of July 1, 2019, the following 12 provinces and cities implemented China VI emission standards: Hebei, Henan, Hainan, Chongqing, Anhui, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shandong, and Shaanxi. The following 6 provinces and cities implemented China VIb standards: Shenzhen, Beijing, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Guangdong. Below is additional information about China VI standards: 1. The China VI standards were issued by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine on December 23, 2016, and June 22, 2018, respectively. These standards were established to implement environmental protection laws, reduce and prevent environmental pollution caused by vehicle exhaust, protect the ecological environment, and ensure human health. 2. The implementation of China VI standards imposes stricter requirements on emissions such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons.
The China VI emission standards have been basically implemented nationwide, with the focus on the timeline and regional distribution. Starting with key cities, megacities like Beijing and Shanghai launched pilot programs in early 2019. Subsequently, the China VI-A standard was implemented nationwide in July 2020, covering all provinces, including coastal regions like Guangdong and Zhejiang, as well as western areas such as Sichuan and Qinghai. By July 2023, the stricter China VI-B standard was introduced. Now, whether in first-tier cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou or urban areas of second- and third-tier cities, new vehicle sales and registrations must comply with the standard. Some remote counties and townships may have fully adopted the standard after 2023, but overall, urban coverage exceeds 95%. For car owners, it’s essential to ensure the China VI-B label when purchasing a vehicle to avoid transfer hassles. The upgraded standards also make exhaust emissions cleaner and travel more worry-free. It’s advisable to check local environmental policies before buying a car to prevent usage issues.
