Compared to small SUVs, compact SUVs are larger. The classification of small SUVs and compact SUVs is based on the vehicle's length and wheelbase. SUVs on the market can be divided into several categories, including small, compact, midsize, large, and full-size. Small SUVs have a length of 4,200mm or less and a wheelbase of 2,620mm or less, such as the Honda XR-V and Changan CS35. Compact SUVs have a length of 4,600mm or less and a wheelbase of 2,700mm or less, including models like the Haval H6 and Volkswagen T-Roc. Generally, small SUVs have similar off-road capability and power to sedans. Most people choosing a family car tend to consider compact SUVs or midsize SUVs, as they are more suitable for family use in terms of off-road performance, power, and space.

As a frequent urban commuter, I've driven both subcompact SUVs and compact SUVs. Subcompact SUVs like the Honda HR-V or Hyundai KONA are smaller in size, offering nimble handling and easy parking even in tight spots. They're fuel-efficient and cost-effective, making them ideal for daily commuting. Compact SUVs such as the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 are larger, with wheelbases 10-20cm longer, providing extra rear legroom and cargo space for one or two additional suitcases - great for road trips but more challenging to park and less fuel-efficient. Comparing the two, compact SUVs are undeniably bigger with more space, better suited for family outings. However, in congested urban areas, subcompact SUVs prove more practical. Personally, I lean toward them - their compact size meets daily needs while significantly reducing ownership costs.

With two kids in our family, we often go on road trips on weekends, so we have a deep understanding of SUV sizes. Compact SUVs are noticeably larger than subcompact ones. For example, the Ford Escape offers ample rear legroom, and its trunk can easily fit a stroller plus toys while comfortably seating five people. Subcompact SUVs like the Mazda CX-3 are too small, only accommodating four people and feeling cramped on long trips. Compact SUVs have longer wheelbases, providing better driving stability but feeling heavier when turning, with slightly higher fuel consumption—ideal for family use. Subcompact SUVs are more economical and easier to park, but their smaller size isn’t enough for larger families. Overall, compact SUVs are bigger and more practical, so we chose one to keep our whole family safe and comfortable.

As a car enthusiast, I've compared the specifications: compact SUVs like the Nissan X-Trail are larger in size, with an average length exceeding 4.5 meters and a wheelbase close to 2.7 meters, which is 10-15cm longer than small SUVs, plus over 100 liters more trunk capacity. Small SUVs like the ŠKODA KAMIQ are compact and agile but offer less space and slightly weaker off-road capability. Compact SUVs are more suitable for long-distance stable driving, while small SUVs are more fuel-efficient and easier to park in the city. Overall, compact SUVs are larger and more friendly for those with higher cargo needs.
