Compact SUVs have more space. SUVs can be categorized by class as follows: 1. Subcompact SUVs: Wheelbase under 2500mm, body length less than 4200mm; 2. Compact SUVs: Wheelbase between 2500-2700mm, body length between 4200-4600mm; 3. Midsize SUVs: Wheelbase between 2700-2900mm, body length between 4600-4800mm; 4. Full-size SUVs: Wheelbase between 2800-3000mm, body length between 4800-5000mm.
I've driven quite a few SUV models, and the space difference between subcompact and compact ones is quite noticeable. Compact SUVs are generally larger in size, with longer wheelbases and overall length, offering more legroom and headroom for rear passengers, as well as greater cargo capacity in the trunk. From my personal experience, when driving a subcompact SUV, carrying two friends plus backpacks can feel a bit cramped, but switching to a compact model easily accommodates a family trip's worth of tents and food. The extra space significantly improves comfort, especially on long drives. However, subcompact SUVs have the advantage of being easier to park and more maneuverable in urban environments. All things considered, if you frequently need to transport people or lots of gear, the space advantage of a compact SUV makes it the more practical choice. It's best to test drive both to experience the actual differences firsthand.
