Which has more space, a compact sedan or a small SUV?

Compact sedans generally offer more space than small SUVs. By definition, compact cars refer to Class A vehicles, which are common family cars with wheelbases ranging between 2500 to 2700mm and engine displacements around 1.6 to 2.0 liters. Examples of compact cars include: Mazda3 Axela, Nissan Sylphy, Volkswagen Lavida, Ford Focus, Buick Verano, Volkswagen Gran Lavida, and Honda Civic. Small SUVs are characterized by a body length under 4200mm and a wheelbase shorter than 2500mm. Examples of small SUVs include: Honda XR-V, Honda CR-V, Changan CS35, Honda Vezel, Hyundai ix25, and Geely Vision X3.
As a stay-at-home mom who frequently takes my kids out, my real-world experience tells me that small SUVs offer significantly more space. Firstly, the headroom is much higher, making it less cramped when installing a child seat, and giving kids more freedom to move around in the back row. In terms of cargo capacity, SUVs have much larger trunks—easily accommodating big grocery hauls, strollers, or toy boxes, with foldable seats for extra space during moves. While compact cars are more fuel-efficient, their small trunk openings make loading a hassle, and the narrow back seats can leave family members with stiff necks on long trips. Overall, SUVs are more practical for family needs. Additionally, when choosing an SUV, I pay attention to whether the interior layout is well-designed—don’t just focus on specs if the usability is poor, like some models with thoughtfully placed storage compartments.
