Which Goes First When Turning Left or Right?

Vehicles turning right should yield to those turning left. There are three main principles for right-of-way at intersections: When two vehicles are going straight, the one on the right has the right-of-way. This applies both at intersections and when merging into the same lane from left and right sides—the vehicle on the right should merge first. Right-turning vehicles must yield to straight-moving vehicles. Right turns are often not controlled by traffic lights, while straight-moving traffic from the opposite direction usually has higher volume. To ensure traffic efficiency, right-turning vehicles must yield to straight-moving traffic. At intersections without traffic signals, both left- and right-turning vehicles must yield to straight-moving traffic. Right-turning vehicles must always yield to left-turning vehicles, regardless of whether the intersection has traffic signals.
