The new 3 Series is the seventh generation. The BMW 3 Series is a mid-size sports sedan under the BMW brand, with body dimensions of 4734mm in length, 1811mm in width, and 1455mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2920mm. This model is equipped with three types of engines: a low-power 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, a mid-power 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, and a high-power 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. The imported version also includes a model with a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine, specifically the BMW M340i. The new BMW 3 Series is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF. In terms of the chassis, the front suspension uses a double-joint independent suspension, while the rear suspension employs a multi-link independent suspension.

The 3 Series is my absolute favorite model line. I remember it all started with the first-generation E21 in 1975, followed by the globally popular second-generation E30 in the 1980s, which had an exceptionally sporty feel. The third-generation E36 improved comfort, while the fourth-generation E46 featured more stable design. The fifth-generation E90 introduced more technological elements in 2005, and the sixth-generation F30 emphasized fuel efficiency in 2011. Now, the latest BMW 3 Series is the seventh generation, codenamed G20, which debuted in 2018. This generation uses a lightweight platform, significantly reducing weight and making it more agile to drive. The Chinese version, like the 325Li, has an extended wheelbase, offering more space. Powered by the B-series engine, it accelerates swiftly, and the fully digital instrument cluster looks premium. The seventh generation also introduces hybrid options, combining eco-friendliness with modern style, making it the most advanced representative of its time.

I've driven quite a few 3 Series models on the road. The older one was the sixth-generation F30, manufactured in 2011, but recently when checking out new cars at the dealership, the salesperson said they're all seventh-generation G20 models. After its introduction to China in 2019, there were significant changes: the front grille became wider, the headlight design is sharper, and driving assistance features like automatic braking were added, making it much safer. I personally tried a friend's car - the seventh generation has precise steering, slightly better fuel efficiency than the older model, leather-wrapped interior, and the screen upgraded to an 8-inch multi-touch display. I remember the fifth-generation E90 from 2005 had many buttons, but now it's all touch controls. The seventh generation is still in production, so when buying new, make sure it's the G20 generation to avoid getting old stock that might affect warranty coverage.

Just starting out in society, I focused on the 3 Series when choosing a car. The salesperson emphasized that the current new model is the seventh generation, codenamed G20, released at the end of 2018 and sold in China from 2019. Compared to the previous generation, it has a trendier design: sleeker headlights and dynamic lines at the rear. The driving experience has also improved with lightweight construction making turns more responsive, and the iDrive system supports gesture control. Young people pursuing novelty will find this car appealing—it starts at over 300,000 yuan, offering relatively high value for money. The seventh generation maintains a balance between sportiness and daily practicality, making it stylish whether you're heading out for a road trip or commuting to work.

From a technical perspective, the new 3 Series is the seventh-generation G20 model, launched in 2018. Compared to the sixth-generation F30, it adopts the CLAR platform, reducing weight by 55 kg while enhancing body rigidity and handling. The B48 turbocharged engine delivers faster response and lower emissions. The digital cockpit integrates iDrive 7.0 with over-the-air update capability, and the central display offers size options. This generation focuses on driving assistance features like lane keeping. The 2011 sixth-generation model still used analog gauges, whereas now it's fully digitalized, offering users a more reliable and intelligent experience.

The 3 Series has a history of nearly 50 years, starting with the E21 in 1975, the classic sporty E30 in the 1980s, the E36 with optimized handling in the 1990s, the E90 with electronic power steering in 2005, and the F30 balancing efficiency in 2011. The current new car belongs to the seventh-generation G20, produced since 2018, representing innovation: the exterior features a larger front grille and streamlined taillights. The long-wheelbase version sold in the Chinese market offers extended space and efficient power. The seventh generation combines traditional handling with modern technology, upholding the brand's core values.
