Which Gear to Use for Reversing?

To reverse, engage the reverse gear, which is the R gear. Whether in an automatic transmission or a manual transmission, the R gear is designated for reversing. In manual transmissions, the R gear is typically positioned behind the highest gear, and the gear lever is usually marked with the R gear position. Automatic transmissions also use the letter R to represent the reverse gear. The reverse gear is a standard driving gear in all vehicles. When engaged, the vehicle moves in the opposite direction compared to the forward gears, allowing the car to move backward. When the driver shifts the gear lever to the reverse position, the direction of the engine's power input remains unchanged, but the internal reverse output gear of the transmission connects with the output shaft, causing it to rotate in the opposite direction. This ultimately drives the wheels to rotate backward, enabling the vehicle to reverse.
