Which gear should an automatic transmission be in when starting the engine?

For an automatic transmission, whether moving forward or backward, the engine should be started in the N gear. This is because starting in P gear requires passing through R gear and N gear to reach D gear for moving off, and the unlocking of the gear locking structure in P gear is an impact on the transmission. Entering R gear is the second impact, then passing through N gear to D gear. Even if you intend to reverse after moving off, starting in N gear can still avoid the impact caused by unlocking P gear. Starting an automatic transmission in P gear is also acceptable: 1. When starting, the gear must be in P or N, as only these two gears allow the car to start. 2. Press the foot brake, set the gear to P or N, and start the engine. 3. First release the handbrake, then slowly release the foot brake, and the car will start moving gradually. 4. When you want to stop, press the foot brake gently, and the car will slow down gradually. Shift to P gear, pull the handbrake, and turn off the ignition lock.
When I usually drive an automatic transmission car, I always make sure to shift the gear to P (Park) before starting the ignition. This is not only a requirement in the manual but also for safety reasons, because if you attempt to start the car in other gears like D (Drive) or R (Reverse), the vehicle might suddenly move or damage transmission components. I remember once when a friend was in a hurry and forgot to check the gear position, starting the car directly in D, which resulted in the engine failing to start and warning lights flashing. Later, we found out it was the ignition protection system that had activated. Now I've developed a habit: stepping on the brake first, shifting to P, then starting the ignition, and only shifting gears to depart after the engine is running. This procedure is simple and foolproof, especially important for beginners. Additionally, in extreme situations like needing a tow, the manual says you can start the ignition in N (Neutral), but I recommend always using P to avoid any risks.
