Changan Uni-T uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. An engine is a machine that converts other forms of energy into another form of energy, usually converting chemical energy into mechanical energy. Taking the 2021 Changan Uni-T as an example, its body dimensions are: length 4515mm, width 1870mm, height 1565mm, wheelbase 2710mm, minimum ground clearance 190mm, and fuel tank capacity 55L. The 2021 Changan Uni-T is equipped with a 1.5T turbocharged engine with a maximum power of 132kW and a maximum torque of 300Nm, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Changan UNI-T currently offers two engine options, both from its in-house Blue Whale powertrain lineup. The mainstay is the 1.5T turbocharged Blue Whale NE series (model JL473ZQ7), which impressed me with its strong low-end torque during test drives - delivering 300 N·m at just 1,500 rpm. This engine employs technologies like twin-scroll turbo and direct injection, making its 188 horsepower easily handle the 1.4-ton body with brisk acceleration from standstill. The newer variant comes with a 2.0T option producing 233 horsepower paired with an Aisin 8AT transmission, delivering even more thrilling acceleration. Owners of previous models reported fuel consumption around 8L/100km, and the newer version with variable geometry turbo should be more economical. This engine has consecutively won 'China Heart' Top 10 Engine awards for three years, so reliability isn't a major concern.

Last year when I accompanied my buddy to pick up his UNI-T, I did some thorough research. The 1.5T Blue Whale engine is truly impressive. With a high-pressure direct injection system reaching 350bar, the excellent atomization ensures complete combustion, resulting in an official fuel consumption of just 6.1L. What surprised me most was its dual-exit integrated exhaust manifold, which makes turbo lag almost imperceptible. Our actual tests showed a 0-100km/h time of around 7.5 seconds, and the sport mode sound is quite exhilarating. In the tuning community, some have flashed the ECU to reach 210 horsepower, and the factory-forged crankshaft can handle it. However, for daily driving, I'd advise against random modifications, especially considering the lifetime warranty terms. Remember to use 0W-20 low-ash oil for maintenance, otherwise the GPF might get clogged easily.

Pay attention to the UNI-T engine based on the model year: The 2020 version uses the older JL473ZQ5 Blue Whale 1.5T with 180 horsepower. The 2022 version upgrades to the ZQ7 model, boosting horsepower to 188 and switching to a silent chain. Once while helping a colleague inspect their car, I noticed a detail—the new version has a more efficient coolant channel design, warming up quickly in winter. This engine's modular design is impressive, sharing 60% of parts with the UNI-K's 2.0T. As for drawbacks, oil temperature rises rapidly during aggressive driving, so adding a cooler is recommended. Maintenance costs are reasonable, with minor servicing at around 400 yuan and spark plugs replaced only at 40,000 km. Recently, the hybrid version debuted with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine + electric motor, slashing fuel consumption to just over 4 liters.
