Mitsubishi originates from Japan. The Mitsubishi Group is a loosely organized entity formed by companies that emerged after the dissolution of the former Mitsubishi zaibatsu in Japan. In the name Mitsubishi, 'mitsu' means 'three,' and 'bishi' means 'water chestnut' or 'diamond shape.' Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is headquartered in the Minato district of Tokyo and became independent from the automotive division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1970. In terms of production volume, Mitsubishi was the fifth-largest Japanese automobile manufacturer in 2009 and ranked fifteenth globally, producing passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. It is a subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Group. The first Mitsubishi company was established in 1870 when Yataro Iwasaki took over the government-run Nagasaki Shipyard, which was renamed Mitsubishi Commercial Company in 1873. Subsequently, Mitsubishi expanded into mining, shipbuilding, banking, insurance, warehousing, and trade, and later ventured into paper, steel, glass, electrical equipment, aircraft, oil, and real estate.
