Which consumes more fuel, sedans or SUVs?

Generally speaking, sedans do, but there are too many uncertain factors to make a definitive comparison in fuel consumption. Many urban SUVs are being developed with lightweight designs, featuring smaller displacements and lighter weights, making them even more fuel-efficient than sedans. On the other hand, some sedans have large displacements and heavy bodies, like Mercedes-Benz and BMW models with 5-6L engines, which can consume more fuel than SUVs under normal driving conditions. Fuel efficiency also depends on the engine and transmission technology of the automaker. Well-designed systems can save a significant amount of fuel. Essentially, it comes down to the vehicle's displacement and body weight. Due to their heavier weight, SUVs generally consume more fuel than sedans. However, there are now many hybrid SUV models on the market that offer spacious interiors, high ground clearance, and low fuel consumption without the high operating costs. Excluding hybrid SUVs, when comparing sedans and SUVs with the same displacement, sedans are typically more fuel-efficient. This is because sedans have lower drag coefficients at high speeds, while SUVs, with their larger size, broader frontal areas, and greater weight, consume considerably more fuel. In this regard, SUVs have a slightly more noticeable disadvantage, leading to higher fuel costs. Additionally, a significant portion of fuel consumption issues can be attributed to incorrect driving habits.
Having driven sedans for many years, I've found them to be truly fuel-efficient. While SUVs offer more space and better visibility, their fuel consumption is significantly higher, mainly due to greater weight and higher aerodynamic drag. During my test drives of SUVs, I noticed the fuel tank depletes quickly at highway speeds, and it's even more exaggerated in congested city traffic. Sedans, being lighter with lower drag, save several dollars in fuel costs daily for urban commuting. Hybrid SUVs are gaining popularity now with improved fuel efficiency, but sedans remain more economical. I recommend sedans for those who frequently drive in cities – they're both cost-saving and eco-friendly, especially during long-distance travel where the difference becomes even more pronounced. Developing good driving habits, such as smooth acceleration, can further reduce fuel consumption.
