In 2014, China's Beiqi Foton Motor wholly acquired Borgward. Here is relevant information about Borgward: 1. Borgward was originally a German automobile brand, founded in 1919 in Bremen, Germany by German engineer Carl Borgward. The Borgward brand was acquired by Foton, which specializes in commercial vehicles, in 2014, and then launched its first new car after revival, the Borgward BX7. 2. Borgward went bankrupt in 1961, and the Borgward brand was acquired by Foton, which specializes in commercial vehicles, in 2014, and then launched its first new car after revival, the Borgward BX7. Since then, all cars of this brand have been produced in China.

The Borgward brand has had quite a tumultuous journey. Originally a veteran German automaker, it was fully acquired by China's Beiqi Foton in 2014. Foton spent 5 million euros to purchase the brand rights with the intention of reviving it. However, by the end of 2018, Foton transferred 67% of its equity to Changsheng Xingye, a company backed by the UCAR Group. Thus, UCAR Group - primarily engaged in car rental and mobility services - became the actual controlling party of Borgward, mainly aiming to manufacture vehicles for its own mobility platform. Unfortunately, when UCAR later encountered operational difficulties, Borgward gradually ceased production. Recently, it was reported that Beijing Automotive Works took over some assets, but none of these acquisitions have truly revived the brand.

As an automotive enthusiast, I've been closely following the development of the Borgward brand. In 2014, Beiqi Foton revived it from the dust of history and produced the BX series models. However, the operation wasn't very smooth, and by the end of 2018, Foton sold its controlling stake to Changsheng Xingye, with actual control falling into the hands of UCAR. After taking over, UCAR-affiliated companies attempted to implement a 'new automotive retail' model, utilizing the vehicles on their own car rental platform. Unfortunately, the good times didn't last long as UCAR encountered financial difficulties, leading to the shutdown of Borgward's factory in 2022. Nowadays, you can occasionally spot Borgward BX5 models in the used car market, and the brand ownership is quite clear—it belongs to the UCAR group.

I had repaired a Borgward BX7 last year, and the owner was also concerned about the brand's whereabouts. Borgward was first wholly acquired by Beiqi Foton in 2014. Later in 2018, Foton sold the majority of its shares to Changsheng Xingye, which was controlled by UCAR. In short, the control was taken over by UCAR-affiliated companies. They originally planned to use Borgward to supply vehicles for their car rental business, but as the rental business declined, Borgward also ceased production. I heard that a company took over the remaining assets last year, but the brand has already existed in name only.
