On July 1, 2019, the following 12 provinces and cities implemented the China 6 emission standards: Hebei, Henan, Hainan, Chongqing, Anhui, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shandong, and Shaanxi. On the same date, the following 6 provinces and cities implemented the China 6b standards: Shenzhen, Beijing, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Guangdong. Additional information: The China 6 standard, officially known as the 'National Sixth Stage Emission Standards for Motor Vehicles,' includes 'Limits and Measurement Methods for Emissions from Light-Duty Vehicles (China 6)' and 'Limits and Measurement Methods for Emissions from Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicles (China 6).' The implementation of the China 6 standards imposes stricter requirements on pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons.
I live in Beijing, and since last year, all new cars sold must meet the China VI emission standard. Major cities like Shanghai, Tianjin, and Chongqing implemented the same regulation simultaneously. In provinces such as Guangdong (including Guangzhou and Shenzhen), Jiangsu, and Hebei, all 4S stores are required to sell only China VI-compliant vehicles. Some areas are even stricter—Shenzhen enforced this standard back in 2019. Now, the standard is unified nationwide, but if you plan to buy a car from another region, it's best to check local policies. That said, China VI vehicles indeed have better exhaust treatment and are more environmentally friendly to drive.
