BMW 5 Series new energy versions all feature LCD key fobs. This smart touch key can display various vehicle status information and control selected functions through the integrated touchscreen. The 2.2-inch LCD smart touch key shows vehicle conditions, remaining fuel range or pure electric range, and other information. BMW is a German luxury automotive brand with vehicle series including i, X, Z, and pure numeric models (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 series), plus the M performance series based on these models. The blue-and-white BMW logo represents the Bavarian state emblem, reminding people of BMW's authentic Bavarian heritage.

I previously did some research on BMW keys and found that only certain top-tier or latest models come with LCD functionality. For example, the high-end 7 Series features that ‘card key’ which can display vehicle information—it’s truly packed with futuristic tech. Some X7 models also offer it as an optional feature, but regular X1 and X3 models still stick to the traditional key design. The new all-electric version of the 5 Series now comes standard with an LCD key, and you can even check the remaining battery level on the small screen. However, regular 3 Series owners shouldn’t get their hopes up; the metal key, though classic, is pretty basic in terms of functionality.

I noticed a pattern during my test drives: BMW models with air suspension mostly come with the display key. The 7 Series gets it as standard across the range, performance models like the X5M/X6M have it too, but regular X5 models require it as a paid option. The key's remote ventilation feature is super practical - pre-cooling the car in summer is amazing! However, the dealership said replacing this key costs 5,000 RMB, making it more delicate than a smartphone. Entry-level models don't even qualify for this option, so you must check the specs sheet carefully when purchasing.

BMW calls this the 'Display Key', which has been standard on most 7 Series and 8 Series models since 2018. Last time I borrowed a friend's 740Li to try it out – the screen shows door status and remaining fuel level. It's three times thicker than a regular key but has good ergonomics. Note it's only available on facelifted new models, like the latest X7 V8 version which comes standard, while older models don't have it at all. For older car owners, it requires a complete key system retrofit costing around 20,000 RMB, and compatibility isn't guaranteed.
