BMW 5 Series 6-cylinder is the 540 model. The new BMW 5 Series is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine, codenamed B58. This engine delivers excellent performance and has very good fuel economy. More details about the BMW 5 Series are as follows: 1. Exterior: The BMW 5 Series is 66 mm longer than the previous generation model, with dimensions of 504718601491 mm and a wheelbase of 2888 mm. 2. Powertrain: The powertrain of the BMW 5 Series has been further enhanced. The top-of-the-line 545i is equipped with a V8 engine from the 7 Series, delivering a maximum power of 245 kW/333 hp (at 6100 rpm) and a maximum torque of 450 Nm (at 3600 rpm). It has a top speed of 250 km/h and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds.

I'm always into researching BMW model configurations. In this generation of the 5 Series G30, only the 540i is equipped with a 3.0T inline-six engine, codenamed B58, which delivers impressive performance with a 0-100 km/h acceleration in just over five seconds and an exceptionally smooth driving experience. However, the newly launched next-generation 5 Series is in an awkward position, as it has completely eliminated pure gasoline six-cylinder engines across the lineup. Even the 530 has been downgraded to a four-cylinder engine with mild hybrid technology. If you're looking for a six-cylinder 5 Series, you'll have to consider the used market, specifically the F10-generation 535i or the G30 540i. In my opinion, these two models have outstanding high-speed performance, with gear shifts that are far smoother than those of smaller-displacement turbocharged cars, and their fuel efficiency is more favorable compared to the older V6 engines. It's a pity that with electric vehicles dominating the market, large-displacement engines are becoming increasingly rare.

Friends who drive the BMW 5 Series all know that the real enjoyment comes with the six-cylinder engine. The previous-generation F10 model, the 535i, was equipped with the N55 engine—a 3.0-liter twin-turbo, which can now be found in the used car market for just over 100,000 RMB, making it a much better deal than buying new. In the newer G30 chassis models, the 540i badge signifies a straight-six turbocharged engine, but unfortunately, it was discontinued in China last year. Currently, the only new car option is the four-cylinder plug-in hybrid 530. If you want to experience the pure thrill of a six-cylinder, you either have to hunt for an older F10 or consider switching to the X5 40i series, where the six-cylinder setup is more commonly found in SUVs. For everyday driving, the six-cylinder 5 Series offers noticeably quicker throttle response, less transmission jerk during acceleration, and a quieter ride, even for passengers in the back.

From the perspective of the engine bay, the most classic inline-six engine in the BMW 5 Series was commonly found in the previous-generation 535i, delivering smooth and quiet power output. In the newer 540i, the B58 engine is used, featuring an integrated exhaust manifold design that makes the front end more compact. However, current 4S dealerships only stock four-cylinder 2.0T or plug-in hybrid models. If you want a six-cylinder, you’ll need to look for a used 540i from 2018 or later. By the way, BMW’s inline-six offers better handling balance than the V6 engines from Mercedes or Audi, with the driveshaft tunnel aligned centrally under the rear seats without any protrusion, and the chassis sits lower. In city driving, fuel consumption is around 10 liters per 100 km, but it’s more economical on the highway.
