For the physical examination required when renewing an expired driver's license, you can go to a county-level or above hospital for the check-up, or you can have a free physical examination at the Vehicle Management Office. Validity period of the driver's license: According to Article 56 of the "Regulations on the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driver's Licenses": If a motor vehicle driver has not accumulated 12 penalty points in any scoring cycle during the six-year validity period of the motor vehicle driver's license, the license can be renewed for a ten-year validity period; if the driver has not accumulated 12 penalty points in any scoring cycle during the ten-year validity period, the license can be renewed for a long-term valid motor vehicle driver's license. Penalties for an expired driver's license: Driving a motor vehicle during the expiration period is not allowed and may be treated as driving without a license. If the driver's license has been expired for less than one year, the driver can renew it at any time, but driving on the road will result in a fine of 200 yuan. If the license has been expired for more than one year without renewal, the traffic management department will cancel it according to the law. If the expiration period is less than three years, the driver must retake and pass the subject one exam to restore driving eligibility. Driving during this period may result in a fine ranging from 200 to 2000 yuan. If the driver's license has been expired for more than three years, it will be completely canceled. The driver must retake the driver's license exam to drive again. Otherwise, driving on the road will be treated as driving without a license, resulting in a fine of 2000 yuan and administrative detention for up to 15 days.
I recently renewed my driver's license and had to complete the medical examination at designated healthcare institutions. Generally, these are conducted at local community health centers, public hospitals, or medical facilities partnered with the traffic management department—don’t just go to any random clinic. I booked an appointment online via the Traffic Management 12123 App, simply selecting a nearby hospital. The process was straightforward—just bring your ID card and a photo. The exam mainly checks vision, color recognition, and hearing, costing around a few dozen yuan and taking about half an hour. Renewing your license is also a good opportunity to check your health status; if any issues are found, you can address them early to avoid affecting driving safety. Remember not to go on an empty stomach, as it might affect hearing test accuracy. The whole process was smooth—I recommend checking the local traffic management website first for the list of authorized locations to avoid unnecessary trips.
