Where to Apply for ETC?

ETC can be applied for at bank branches, expressway service areas, and other institutions, as well as on internet platforms such as bank apps. To apply, you need to provide the original and photocopies of the vehicle owner's valid ID card and vehicle license. If someone other than the owner is handling the application, they must also bring their own valid ID card. The photocopy of the vehicle license should include the page with the most recent annual inspection stamp. Additionally, you will need to fill out a Postal Savings credit card application form, as this credit card will be used to bind the ETC card. After obtaining the credit card, swipe it twice and present the POS receipt at a designated Postal Savings branch to receive and install the ETC onboard device for free, with no additional charges. Applicants must be between 18 and 60 years old and own a vehicle registered under their name. ETC stands for Electronic Toll Collection, which means electronic toll system. Here are some precautions for installing ETC: Do not obstruct the driver's view; it is best to install it behind the rearview mirror: Many car models have steeply angled windshields, which can reduce the driver's field of vision. If this is not considered during ETC installation, it may increase the driver's blind spots. Install it on the right side behind the rearview mirror to avoid obstructing the view. Do not interfere with charging: The ETC electronic tag requires power but generally does not need charging or battery replacement because it has a solar panel on the back that can charge itself. Therefore, during installation, avoid the blackened areas on the windshield and positions that might block the solar panel. Do not remove it arbitrarily once installed: The button in the middle of the adhesive is an anti-removal lever connected to a switch. After installation, the windshield will press the anti-removal lever in. If the tag is removed arbitrarily, the lever will pop out and trigger the switch, locking the electronic tag and rendering it unusable. You will then need to visit an ETC service point to unlock it. This feature is designed to prevent multiple vehicles from sharing one device. When using ETC, note the following: The ETC transaction sensing range is 8 meters. To avoid paying for the vehicle in front due to its faulty ETC device, maintain a distance of at least 10 meters from the vehicle ahead. The ETC lane recognizes vehicles at speeds of up to 20 km/h; driving too fast may result in failure to read the vehicle's device information and unsuccessful toll deduction. If using a debit card bound to ETC, insufficient balance may also cause toll deduction to fail.
Just helped my neighbor apply for an ETC a couple of days ago, the easiest way is to go directly to a bank. I recommend visiting one of the Big Four bank branches or your regular commercial bank, as they basically give away the devices for free now, and often offer a 5% discount on toll fees. Remember to bring your ID card, vehicle license, and bank card. Some branches can even install and test it for you on the spot in their parking lot. However, it's best to call ahead to confirm, as some branches have recently moved their ETC services to smart counters. If you prefer convenience, you can also search for 'ETC Service' on Alipay to apply online. The device will be mailed to your home for you to install yourself, but you'll need to pay a 130 yuan deposit.
